Description

I've done the G3 already, but its tender is still unfinished; it'll probably be done tomorrow.

Indeed. Note that the engine is actually drawn as 5.5 lu and the tender as 2.5 lu, I believe that reflects their sizes most accurately. The engine should also overlap the tender by one pixel in horizontal view.

The cab in the fifth view, top row (and the reverse direction as well) looks a bit off to me. As that view usually isn't seen very long and might still look good together with the tender, it's probably a non-issue though.

#20 Updated by michi_cc over 8 years ago

One thing that could be better is the low visibility of the lighter "strips" on the boiler in the angled views. I don't have a clue though how that could be improved with so few pixels though :(

PS: Hmm, can't edit my own entry?

#21 Updated by oberhuemer over 8 years ago

You need to be a CETS team member for that.

Yes, the cab may be a little off - but I don't think anyone will notice, as you said. Those strips are supposed to be the steam dome and sand box, I haven't found a way to make that look any better either. In any case, I'd rather get some more engines done before everything's corrected to death again.

Fixed the cab after all, the S1 is done too. It was planned to be used by the DRG as class 12, but never was; I've made it in black too anyway. It also really used a different, but very similar tender that I won't bother drawing. Oh, and I'll have a go at the T3 next.

Just thinking... why the T11 and not the T12? Why not the G8.1? I'd assume "core" stands for "most frequently used engines in a certain area".

#34 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

"core" is a mixture of three criteria:
  1. "engine was available in (relatively) large numbers"
  2. "one engine of every usage type about every 10 years" and
  3. "it feels 'right'"

the G8.1 fails criterium 2 with the G12

T11 or T12 was mainly a decision between railtypes, and criterium 3 made the decision here.

#35 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

The thing with the T11 is that it's only insignificantly more powerful (really only faster) than the T9.1 and used very long. There's also a huge power gap between T11 and T18, though they weren't really used for the exact same thing anyhow. The weight argument also seems pretty insignificant to me because the P8, the first engine that requires improved tracks, comes right after it and would effect a type conversion on most lines anyhow.

#36 Updated by michi_cc about 8 years ago

The T11 was chosen because it still belongs to the 16t axle weight category. Except the G10 all other engines that are introduced shortly after the T11 have a higher axle weight, so we need it to keep the lowest track class viable.

#37 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

michi_cc wrote:

Well, that's exactly why I'm saying it wouldn't matter if its weight were higher:

[P8/other engines] would effect a type conversion on most lines anyhow.

And:

it's only insignificantly more powerful (really only faster) than the T9.1

that can still be bought for almost the whole time period during which the T11 was built and is introduced not too long before it.

So, an engine that's light but not really worth it would be exchanged against one that's heavier but almost twice as strong.

#38 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

in addition to what michi_cc said, the T12 (actually also the T18) kinda overlaps with the P8, since there is no clear gameplay concept to distinguish between short-distance and long-distance engines (this is most clearly seen with the 24 and the 64, which for all intents and purposes differ only by the tender). in those cases i usually took the builtin-tender version for "local" and "light cargo" categories (which are likely to be used on short branch lines), and the additional-tender versions for "passenger" and "heavy cargo" categories (which are more likely to be used on main lines).

#39 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

The P8 is much stronger and faster too, and differentiating between short and long distance engines is a whole new task in itself.

#40 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

By the way, anyone up for coding what's there?

#41 Updated by michi_cc about 8 years ago

oberhuemer wrote:

That's exactly the point of the T11, to provide something for those lines you don't/won't/can't upgrade.

#42 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

Once again, there's the T9.1 for that; it's not like the T11 was used on rural branch lines anyhow.

#43 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

the T11 is (slightly) more powerful and faster than the T9.1, i don't see your problem.

you could argue that the T9.3 was more likely to be found on rural branch lines, and is kind of an intermediate step in the development between the T9.1 and T11, but there is hardly any sense in including that...

#44 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

The logical sequence to me would actually be a replacement of the T9.1 by the 64, with the T12 starting off the category of commuter trains (which it is included in, after all)- the T11 isn't really distinct enough stat-wise for that.
I do realize there's a big time gap between the former two, but I can't really think of any good intermediate options.

#48 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

I think the S4 also should be included in "core", there's a big distance from S1 to S10.1 right now in every sense of the word. Besides, the S1 was downgraded to regular passenger service after a while.

#49 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

oberhuemer wrote:

By the way, anyone up for coding what's there?

there are currently 2 things "blocking" this
  1. i have not yet created template code for the odd-length graphics
  2. switching between the 24m/16lu calculation to 24m/12lu is problematic for the articulated vehicles (engine+tender in this case)

I think the S4 also should be included in "core", there's a big distance from S1 to S10.1 right now in every sense of the word.

i tend to agree here.

#50 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

I added the T12 and S4 now to core, but i don't think we should remove the T11, because it is the fastest low axle weight engine available until the 24/64.

Maybe we should also consider adding something between the P2 and the P8.

#51 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

Fine with me. I'd say the P4.1 would work best as intermediate between P2 and P8.
I'll take care of the code templates.

#52 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

I've done the "callbacks_" and "gfx_front_vehicle_" files for 3 lu and 5 lu, anything else besides the same thing for more lengths?
I also don't quite understand this:

switching between the 24m/16lu calculation to 24m/12lu is problematic for the articulated vehicles (engine+tender in this case)

#53 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

in general, after adding template graphics, the offsets need to be reviewed, the automatically calculated values are not always correct. but i'm afraid it's quite a bit more complicated than that.

i have changed the tracking table now so that we can easily give the length of a 24m vehicle, and set whether we want to allow odd-length or only even-length vehicles ("granularity"), but the callbacks need adjustments for this to work.

also i have changed the steam engine's "custom callbacks" column to take the new length into account, but that does not magically create the necessary files. (src/<company>/callbacks_tender_<tender_name>_<engine_length>.pnml)

currently all vehicles longer than 6lu are articulated of 2 parts (8lu and 10lu), 3 parts (12lu) or 4 parts (16lu), each of the lengths has a separate dummy-vehicle (to simplify callbacks) and this is done per company (to simplify graphics selection (not implemented yet)). it is planned that the front vehicle and the dummy vehicles each display a slice of the vehicle sprite, to avoid (some) glitches around slopes, tunnels and bridges. currently, the front vehicle displays the whole sprite (except for 16lu vehicles, the 1st dummy displays the sprite here).

if we want to allow odd-length vehicles, we need more dummy vehicles by this scheme, and IDs < 128 are a scarce ressource. IDs < 128 are needed for the articulated vehicle callback to work. Also, the system by which "real" articulation is done is still in some state of flux, and needs some design decisions whether to use more IDs or more complex callbacks.

#54 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

  • Target version set to 0.1.0

It seems simpler to me to just define all invisible vehicles once, how would that impede graphics selection? (Are there actually any that are really company-specific?)

#55 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

the idea was that coding the company into the vehicle ID will cut down the size of the decision-tree for the graphics selection, but maybe that is not the best idea anymore.

while trying to get the graphics into the game i noticed something:

your steam engines are occasionally shorter than the length i noted down in the tracking table. while the lengths are not very accurate in the first place, due to me having no data about the length of the tender, i still find this a strange oddity. i have corrected this now, but i'd still like to know which data you based your lengths on.

also, the image for the T3 has an invalid palette.

#111 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

The only one I could see was the S10.1, and that was right in the middle between two lengths. I took the shorter one because that makes it closer to the P8, which the design was originally based on. Some have two pixels cut off the end because they're not using the intended tender (3 T 10,5 instead of 2'2 T 16 or 3 T 15 instead of 2'2 T 21,5).
I think I'm going to use the same green color for all of these engines, the P10 will also be done very soon.

#112 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

if you feel the need to update or add any graphics, you can check them directly into the repostitory.

file name format is:
src/gfx/A/B_C_D.png

where:
  • A is the (first) company name as per the tracking table (e.g. "pruss")
  • B is the vehicle's short name as per the tracking table (e.g. "G7_2")
  • C is the length (numerical value only, no "lu") (e.g. "5")
  • D is a variant name that you are free to choose (alphanumeric and underscore only [A-Za-z0-9_]) (e.g. "DRG")

be aware of case sensitivity. e.g. check the extension is ".png" and not ".PNG"

the variant name will be noted in the "Graphics" column in the tracking table, currently only the "default" variant will be used, but this will change in the future, so it will also evaluate conditions, support loading stages, etc.

i'm not quite content with the / and \ views of the engines. in the wheel section there are some very prominent vertical lines that (imho) look awful. consider that this is the view that is displayed on the map most of the time.

The best I could think of, it's really only an issue for engines with large wheels.

Would a recoloring table (or several) that converts actually used colors to company colors be an option?

#183 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

there are lots of options, depends on what you try to achieve?

#184 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

Ideally one to make CETS use only company colors for people who like it that way.

#185 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

hm... i'm not entirely sure whether that would be easier than just redrawing every sprite in 1CC/2CC by hand, as you might get some odd results with recolouring. but in principle there does not exist a technical limitation why that wouldn't work.

also i'm not really sure why we would need to offer that at all, but that's probably a discussion for a later date.

#186 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

some different problem: the P2 is currently the only engine not offering a DRG sprite, but its tender does. now when the time comes to repaint them, the P2 and its tender have different colours.

solutions:
  • offer DRG sprite for P2 as well
  • duplicate tender with one that does not get recoloured
  • magic trickery on the tender to make recolouring dependent on the engine's ID

#187 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

Number 2, as the P2 really shouldn't be in use anymore in 1925. About the recoloring table: I'll try to keep company colors (not counting black, grey, white or similar) separate from other "filler" colors so they can be remapped.

#188 Updated by Eddi about 8 years ago

"it's outdated by then" is kind of the wrong argument, as people could e.g. play with breakdowns off and vehicles never expire. or they could keep a museum vehicle, or something.

problem with variant 2 is that it occupies another vehicle ID < 128, which we could quickly run out of. they are the only ones possible to use for articulated vehicles, and we need 2 per MU, meaning we can only have like 64 MUs distributed over all companies included.

of course $someone could provide a new and improved articulated vehicle callback...

#189 Updated by oberhuemer about 8 years ago

So there should also be, say, an E16 in traffic red? Point is, there's no reason to use it anymore at that point, and it never was (->no "museum vehicle" in black). Number 3 is the best then, this is also a singular case.

there was a bug in the sprite sizes that prevented this from showing before.

the following sprites are one pixel too short (either add a row of transparent blue, or move one pixel lower):

Some experimenting, please comment; I like it better this way, also removes those vertical lines.

Just some different power values for early steam engines, and missing TE values. Very useful page for this: http://www.lokodex.de/
