Description

A quite easy, but still complex question:
When should 2.0 be released?

The highly appreceated drawingspree of Voyager1 and Emperor Jake dont ever seem to stop (yey), but we should probably set ourselves a 'limit' on when we shoult release.
What im thinking is that we release a beta5 (as i actually got up to beta4 before voy1 started his spree) when the new freight wagons are done. Then i stop adding more engines, even if they are drawn, until all minor or major bugs are gone.
Let the beta5 stay out for about a week, and then if there are no complaints, the 'final' 2.0.0 is to be released.

Then we can set new goals, when x number of this, and x number of that is drawn, coded and tested, we release 2.1.0. If there come any bugs we fix them and release a 2.x.1, etc...

I feel the version 2.0 is already long overdue, as im quite ashamed about the current version 1.0.1 that on bananas.

More engines is indeed not what should stop a release. 2ccTS has more than enough of them. Fright wagons are indeed probably what could need a re-touch - but on the other hand the question is: are the current ones sufficient to transport everything (ECS, FIRS, PBI, default) appropriately without major flaws - or do they really need an overhaul? If it is even fine with the current wagons: then you might call it even 2.0.0 now. Still I'd add one or two beta versions just to iron out bugs and glitches which surely will be found. Why is also the 2.0.0-beta4 not on bananas?

If the current wagons work (afaik they do), they could just as well be added in 2.1.0 or alike. The other important question is - and which IMHO needs much more solving than renewed wagons - how to use and handle parameters: how and whether to limit regions, how to possibly select a (general or regional) subset of engines, maybe limited also by tracks (metro / rails / maglev separately?). Those are IMHO quite important features which also have big impact on how this set will be received. Honestly, I currently drown in engines.

I feel the version 2.0 is already long overdue, as im quite ashamed about the current version 1.0.1 that on bananas.

I agree - an update, a beta could well go to bananas. With probably a min version requirement of OpenTTD 1.1.0-beta-whatever or ~ >r21000 as it's probably needed for the track magic of the vehicles.

Indeed we got enough engines and MUs (though it never bored to keep on drawing). I do think we should at least include some more cargo wagons, we've been really lacking those.

The parameters and settings are important too, indeed. At least we'll have to decide on how to do them.

IMO, adding new engines and MUs can be set on the lowest priority, unless they really fill a gap.

Look people, just be honest with me. If you want me to stop drawing, just say so, no problem. Or give me more specific guidelines what you want me to draw.

As for the ver 2.0, I see no reason for not releasing it (just include Jake's wagons), there could always be a ver 2.1, 2.2, 3.0, 99.9...

Now, I don't know how soon can Jake finish his wagons, but I can finish the railbus/metro list in cca 7-10 days. After that, I can take a break.

Oh, noone wants you to stop drawing, on the contrary :-D We'd deprive us of many nice new sprites :-)
But maybe you could shift your focus from engines to wagons for the time being? ;-) - especially the open wagons, most of all the flatbed wagons need nice sprites for different cargos.

you guys should use the roadmap, that it is for, also be aware that branching/merging is quite easy with hg :-)

i do not mind more stuff! far from it! But i feel we should wait until the wagons are done with a 'proper' release. Perhaps when you are done with the current pax stuff you could team up with jake and finish the wagons?

Of course, I don't mind giving Jake a hand... He just needs to assign me something so we don't overlap.

I'll definitely finish my stuff in 7-10 days so we can sort of conclude this "chapter".

Just pick something and declare that you'll work on it. Easier this way. He only has to do something then when he wants to contradict.

I've allocated some freight wagons for Voyager1 to do, I've sent him a PM with info needed.

I'm not very accustomed to different cargoes and their drawings (especially FIRS and ECS). IMO, I could be more useful with pax and mail wagons.

IMHO it's not something which you can learn or have to take directly from the (industry) sets, but rather be creative in what the cargo could look like, given its name. Possibly it could even have different representations: like steel could come in coils or in big metal sheets or in or in cantilever form.

With a train set as large as this one, in my opinion a widely available beta (RC?) with a feature freeze would be a good idea. Also, I think that a new major version should have cargo sprite support for all major industry sets (FIRS, ECS and PBI). Lastly, for the reasons already mentioned on the task, it would be quite nice to have #2175 in the new version (both regional and train type settings).

and that feature freeze do i think should come with the new wagons. And with the default cargo as bare minimum for a 2.0.0. Then the ECS/FIRS/PBI cargoes can come in a later update, but should be a priority for the drawers.
And yes, #2175 will be included in some way.

I don't know much about industry sets and cargo types, but how hard is it to support them?

How up-to-date is our roadmap btw?

#15 Updated by Voyager1 over 8 years ago

The problem is that I don't even know how ECS/FIRS cargoes look like and what they are! I've played maybe one-two test games with those.

Hopefully will the wagon-people be finished within 2 weeks, and then i hope to release a beta5/RC1 around april 1st, and then we hopefully have ironed out any bugs when we get to easter. That is aprox 15th april.
